Mary E. O'Mahony

Mary Elizabeth O’Mahony, 84, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2022. Born on January 29, 1938 to Wilhelmina and Detective Sergeant Henry Linson Wood in Tarrytown, NY. The second daughter to the couple, Mary was the younger sister of Margaret and older sister of Linson. The Wood family lived in Tarrytown until Mary was a senior in high school when they moved to Elmsford, NY where Mary graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School. While in school, Mary earned the highest award in home economics that could be achieved. Something that she was very proud of and lived up to every day. Soon after graduating from high school and attending Westchester Community College, Mary was hired for her first job at the County Trust Company of White Plains, NY. While working, she made many friends at her job, one friend was helpful in arranging the meeting between Mary and the man who became the love of her life, an Irishman, James O’Mahony. The two had a wonderful romance that led to an engagement and then a spring wedding, April 20, 1963. Not long after, the happy couple welcomed a baby boy, James Jr. Twenty days, less than a year, they welcomed another baby boy, John. In 1969, Mary and James purchased their first home in West Milford, NJ. With the new home, another baby, this time a little girl, Mary Ellen. Many happy days were spent in their new home with lots of family and friends as Mary loved to entertain by cooking delicious meals. Mary’s home was always sparkling clean and ready for guests at any time. As time went on, a job transfer for James led the family back to NY, moving to Pleasantville. They lived there until retirement when Mary and James split their time between their summer cottage on Twin Lakes in CT and their condominium on Longboat Key, FL. Also, in retirement, they spent many months in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland visiting family and friends. In 2000 they travelled across the United States for three months, reaching 13,500 miles roundtrip. In addition to being a wonderful homemaker, wife and Mother, Mary worked throughout the years at several different jobs including being a receptionist for H&R Block for over 25 years and was recognized for her years of service. Other jobs included working at Marymount College and she was the school secretary at the Church of the Transfiguration School. While living on Longboat Key, Mary was an active member of the Ladies Guild at St. Mary Star of the Sea church. Mary was a person that would help anyone, at any time. Always had an ear to listen, spoke encouraging words to help whoever needed a lift. She loved music and dancing, white wine, going out for dinner, loved her husband, children and grandchildren with all her heart and soul. She’s also known for teaching many friends and family how to water ski! Mary is survived by her son John of Pleasantville, daughter Mary Ellen and son-in-law Justin Meyer of Mahopac, grandchildren Olivia and Chloe Meyer of Mahopac, Daniel O’Mahony of Mahopac and Cathryn O’Mahony of Melbourne, FL. Her brother Linson and his wife Ann of Liverpool, NY. As well as sister in laws Mary Treacy of London, England and Joanne O’Mahony of Greenwich, CT, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, new and old. Mary is predeceased by her husband James in 2018 and son James Jr. in 2020. Sister Margaret Smith in 2013, Susie Smith 2013.
