Darren Demeterio

With profound sadness and endless love, we announce the passing of Darren Demeterio who peacefully passed away at home on June 28, 2026 after a valiant multi year fight with colon cancer at the age of 55. He was surrounded by the unwavering love of his devoted wife, Jacqueline, his adoring daughters, Sophia and Vivienne, his loving mother Barbara Elias and his steadfast brother Scott Demeterio. Born on December 10, 1970 in Brooklyn, New York to Barbara and Socrates, he was the oldest of two sons and raised on Long Island. He attended Saint Dominic high school in Oyster Bay where he developed his great love of sports. He played basketball at a young age as well as high school, but his greatest athletic passion was soccer, which he played competitively for 15 years. Darren would go on to attend the University of Hartford, where he majored in communications. He began his career at The Late Show with David Letterman and left as a multi-Emmy award winning talent booker. Subsequently landing him at ESPN in 2011, where his talent of effective communication intersected with his love of sports and resulted in multiple more Emmys that bear his name. While Darrens professional accomplishments were extraordinary, his greatest achievement was the family he built alongside his incredible wife, Jacqueline. His daughters, Sophia and Vivienne, were the center of his world and his greatest source of pride and joy. Darren’s love of sports extended far beyond the sidelines. He proudly coached his daughters’ CYO basketball and AYSO soccer teams, helping lead them to a championship.He also found immense joy exploring the world with his family. Every adventure became a treasured memory—whether at a Fulham match in London, attending Yankees World Series games, attending matches in Barcelona and Sevilla, traveling to multiple Super Bowls, or attending more than 150 Bruce Springsteen concerts. Every journey was made more meaningful because it was shared with the people he loved most. Our hearts are heavy, but we find comfort in the countless memories he leaves behind. His legacy lives on in the love of his family, the friendships he cherished, the lives he touched, and the example he set. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Darren is survived by his beloved wife Jacqueline Oknaian Demeterio; his cherished daughters Sophia and Vivienne, his loving mother, Barbara Elias and stepfather Marc Elias, his brother, Scott Demeterio, Mother in Law, Rose Oknaian, brother in law Dave Oknaian, his Aunt JoAnne&Uncle Steve Barrena, cousins Sarah & Sydney. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation at Dwyer & Michael’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 30, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 1, at the Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown, New York, at 10:30am, with an interment following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the remarkable physicians, surgeons, nurses, aides, and staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, whose extraordinary skill, compassion, and kindness carried Darren and his family through every stage of his courageous fight. They are equally grateful to the dedicated team at MD Anderson Cancer Center for embracing Darren’s case with hope, expertise, and unwavering commitment. The family will forever be thankful for the exceptional care, dignity, and compassion shown to Darren throughout his journey.
