Alfred Grech

Born, May 1, 1938, Alfred Valentino Grech arrived in the United States at the age of twelve with his mother and four siblings from Tarxien, Malta, joining their father who arrived two years prior to establish a new life for the family. The son of Moses and Stella, Fred immediately enrolled at the Benjamin Franklin High School in Manhattan and graduated early at the young age of fifteen. After graduating with a BS in Accounting at City College, Fred continued to study and went on to receive his CPA, soon after. Fred never encountered a Saturday NY Times crossword puzzle that could defeat him. Employing his great gift for numbers, Fred served as an accountant in the US Army while stationed at Ft. Sam in Houston, TX from 1960-62. During his time in the Army, he earned the Marksman Badge medal for Rifle M-1. After his service, Fred thrived with his private accounting practice for over forty years in Huntington, NY. On an autumn evening at a Friday night dance, Fred and Marilyn met the loves of their lives. They were married on June 8, 1968, and have two children, David and Dennis. Fred is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Ossining, NY), son David and his wife Judith and their three daughters Samantha, Sarah and Emma (Pleasantville, NY) as well as his son Dennis and his partner Jeronimo and their children Valentina and Massimo (Fort Lee, New Jersey) as well as his sister Agnes Lamb and her husband Walter (Florham Park, NJ) and his brother Charles (Stroudsburg, PA). Fred also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and their beloved children, who he enjoyed very much. The kindest and sweetest husband and grandfather, Fred had boundless patience. He was youthful until his final days getting on the floor to play with his grandchildren, walking along the Hudson River and even tubing at age 80! An avid reader, he was captivated by World War II and European history. When not traveling to Malta or enjoying road trips up and down the east coast of the US, Fred could be found enjoying a bowl of ice cream while plotting to become the next contestant on Jeopardy! His wit and wisdom will be missed by all those that knew and loved Fred. A celebration of Fred’s life will be held this weekend with calling hours, Friday, August 4th from 4-8pm at Dwyer & Michael’s Funeral Home in Tarrytown. A funeral will be held Saturday, August 5th at 10am at The Church of the Transfiguration in Tarrytown, with a burial immediately following.
